Clinton Sparks Mixed Reactions
Arizona Republic July 8, 1999
Inside the La Canasta factory, a crowd of about 200 business people, elected officials and community leaders fanned themselves and chatted as they awaited Clinton's arrival.
Mariachis kept the crowd entertained as Port-a-Coolers loudly tried to pump cool air into the high ceilinged space, blocked off from the factory by pallets stacked with sacks of tortillas and yellow corn. The coolers were cut off before the round-table discussion started, so the participants could be heard in the jam-packed room.
Many had dressed expecting to swelter. Golf shirt and sleeveless dresses were more prominent than the die-hards' white-shirt-and-tie look. Workers, meanwhile, busied themselves making tortillas. Eventually, Clinton swept through, squeezing hands, and then settled in for a quick speech and round-table discussion. The motorcade left under a dark blue sky, just before a dust storm hit.
